Handel’s biblical oratorio Israel in Egypt, with its virtuosic choruses and characterful arias, is a perfect showcase for the Monteverdi Choir which combines consummate choral technique and a scholarly approach with a passion for immediacy and drama. The oratorio vividly evokes frogs, flies, hailstones and the parting of the Red Sea, as it follows Moses and the Children of Israel through the story of the Exodus. The Monteverdi Choir, founded in 1964 for a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers, will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2024. Over the course of its lifespan it has established itself as one of greatest choirs in the world.
